First licensed as a teenager, Jim has been a ham for fity years. He graduated from LSU with a BS and MS in electrical engineering, and for a time taught circuits and field theory in LSU's EE department before working in the petrochemical industry for nearly a decade. He rejoined LSU and taught physics for almost a quarter century before retiring in 2012. He is still the trustee of the Amateur Radio Society at LSU (K5LSU and W5YW).

Jim's main interests in radio are QRP operating, APRS and high altitude ballooning with the LSU physics department, kit and scratch building radios and accessories, and designing radios and accessories. His signiture is the custom made wood box that often houses his finished products, some of which will be on display at OzarkCon. He and two other members of the Baton Rouge ARC put together a pair of club kit projects that proved very popular. In addition to the Baton Rouge ARC and ARS at LSU, Jim is a member of the USS Kidd ARC.

Gloria (WD5CMA) and Jim have been married for 42 years, with a son, Ian (W5WWX) and daughter Gina. They met, and married, while both were members of the LSU Tiger Band (flute & bassoon, trombone & euphonium).
